Youth Development Specialist, early childhood expertise
40 hours per week

The psychologist/ortho pedagogue is a domain specialist who relates to socio-educational early childhood developments within the Center of Expertise (EC2). The YDS/ortho pedagogue is the substantive lynchpin in the process of action-oriented supervision of children with special educational needs ages 0 to 7.
As a coach and resource person, the psychologist/ortho pedagogue provides advice to care takers, teachers, assistants, care coordinators and parents about the guidance of these children. He or she expertly analyzes problems presented and quickly provides appropriate solutions. In addition, he/she contributes to educational development / and provides training to internal supervisors, educational staff and teachers.
The professional would be qualified to perform psychological assessments such as ability testing and behavior observations and is knowledgeable about strategies to guide children with exceptionalities.
In his or her work, the psychologist/ortho pedagogue maintains short lines of communication with others involved in EC2.

Your letter and resume show that you have:

  •  a completed degree in behavioral science/ortho pedagogy.
  •  work experience in special (elementary) education or Day Care center.
  •  knowledge of and experience with behavioral problems and systemic work.
  •  knowledge of the problems associated with the young at-risk child.
  •  professional knowledge, knowledge of action-oriented and cyclical working.
  •  a proactive attitude, focused on cooperation and able to act independently)
  •  skills in handling group processes and an understanding of group dynamics.
  •  the ability to identify bottlenecks at individual, group and Day Care/school level and advise on an appropriate approach.
  •  the ability to counsel children, parents and team members about behavioral problems and didactic problems.
  •  ability to reflect and put things into perspective.
  •  strong communication skills and a friendly approach, both to children, parents, teaching staff and team members.
  •  strong coaching ability.
  •  a team player-spirit with the ability to connect.

Tasks may comprise of:

A: Information and advice

  1.  Be available at the schools and child-care center at regular hours for observation, hands-on activities and intervention.
  2.  Contribute to the Individual Education Plan or Individual Development Plan of students.
  3.  Be in contact with the parents about planned activities and goals.
  4.  Give feedback in order to achieve consistency in approaches.
  5.  Be available to exchange information with other organizations involved with youths.

B: Intake and guidance

  1. Have intake interviews with, parent, care takers, assistants and teachers.
  2. Offer the first line of support for teachers, parents and children through group visits at Day Care classroom visits at school, home visits, workshops or individual sessions.
  3. Plan and execute intervention for students with socio-emotional or specific behavioral challenges.
  4. Plan and execute client-based or general preventative intervention for young at risk child.
  5. Support and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders in addressing domestic violence and abuse on Saba.
  6. Contribute to the development of an island youth policy.

C: Planning and reporting

  1. Develop a Guidance Plan per year and a progress report per term in writing.
  2. Maintain hands-on case management for (practical and psychological support) young children with complex social needs.
  3. Contribute to the development of a social path for youths in the education system and general community.
  4. Give regular feedback on the status of interventions through meetings or written reports.

D: Communication structure

  1. Engage and maintain contact on an operational level with Public Entity Saba, Ministry of Education and Science, local colleagues of Public Health Welfare & Sports, Youth Care and Social Affairs & Labor.
  2. Participate in regular team meetings at EC2.
  3. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams (Care Advice & Referral Team).
  4. Participate in Small Care Team Meetings (Absolute Daycare, Sacred Heart Primary School).
  5. Participate in Conscious Discipline program.

E: Own development

  1.  Request financing to follow courses on topics relevant to the context of the job (show how new skills are applied in daily work).
  2. Request financing to attend workshops, seminars and conferences where feasible.
